Comparison
NR vs NMN: which NAD+ precursor should you actually take?
Both raise NAD+. They differ in how much human evidence exists, how they are absorbed, and how their regulatory status has moved. Here is the honest version, including where NMN wins.

NR (nicotinamide riboside) and NMN (nicotinamide mononucleotide) are both NAD+ precursors and both have human data showing they raise NAD+. NR has the longer and larger human trial record and an uninterrupted regulatory history in US dietary supplements. NMN spent roughly three years in US regulatory limbo before the FDA reversed course in late 2025 and confirmed it is lawful in supplements. If you want the option with the most human trials behind it, that is NR — which is what simplyNAD+ uses, at 600mg per packet.*
Side by side
| Nicotinamide riboside (NR) | Nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMN) | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | A form of vitamin B3 attached to a ribose sugar | NR with a phosphate group added |
| Steps to NAD+ | Converted to NMN, then to NAD+ | Converted directly to NAD+ |
| Human trials | The larger published human record, including multi-week dosing studies | A growing but smaller human record |
| Raises blood NAD+ in humans? | Yes — shown in published trials1,2 | Yes — shown in published trials |
| US regulatory status | Lawful in dietary supplements throughout | Excluded by FDA in 2022; FDA reversed and confirmed lawful status in late 2025 |
| In simplyNAD+ | 600mg per packet | Not used |
The part most brands skip: NMN is not the enemy
You will find NAD+ brands claiming NMN is banned. As of late 2025 that is out of date. After a citizen petition and litigation, the FDA reversed its 2022 exclusion and confirmed NMN may lawfully be sold as a dietary ingredient. If a page still tells you NMN is illegal, that page has not been updated.
The real difference is depth of evidence, not legality. NR has been studied in humans for longer, which is why we chose it. That is a preference based on evidence, not a claim that NMN does not work.*
Does the extra conversion step matter?
In theory NMN is "one step closer" to NAD+. In practice, the step that matters is getting into the cell at all, and there is ongoing scientific debate about how each molecule crosses the cell membrane — a 2025 review in Food Frontiers lays out the competing mechanisms.4 What is settled is the outcome: published human trials show oral NR raises blood NAD+.1,2,3 That is the endpoint we care about.*
600mg NR in a berry shot, not a horse pill
Most NR products are capsules — often several a day. simplyNAD+ is one 10-second liquid packet, with quercetin, trans-resveratrol and PQQ already in it.

Published human dosing sits broadly in the 250mg–1,000mg per day range. Martens and colleagues used 500mg twice daily for six weeks;3 Conze and colleagues ran a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of long-term NR administration in healthy overweight adults and reported it was well tolerated.5 simplyNAD+ delivers 600mg in a single daily packet, which sits inside that range.*
Frequently asked
Is NR better than NMN?
NR has more human trial data behind it, which is why we use it. That is an evidence-depth argument, not a claim that NMN is ineffective. Anyone telling you one is definitively superior is ahead of the science.
Is NMN banned in the US?
No. The FDA excluded it in 2022, but reversed that position in late 2025 and confirmed NMN is lawful in dietary supplements. Pages still claiming otherwise are out of date.
Can I take NR and NMN together?
There is no established reason to, and no trial we would point to that tested the combination. If you are already taking something, check with your doctor rather than stacking on guesswork.
Why 600mg?
It sits inside the range used in published human trials, and it fits in one packet so you are not taking four capsules to get there.
Does NR cause flushing like niacin?
NR is a different form of vitamin B3 from nicotinic acid, and the flushing reaction people associate with niacin is not what NR trials have reported. Individual responses still vary.
